The central part features a cartouche with a two-line inscription: ГРИВЕННИКЪ (GRIVENNIK). Below the inscription is the year of mintage — 1788. Above the cartouche is the crown of the Russian Empire. To the left and right, two laurel branches emerge from the cartouche's vignettes. - Obverse
The center of the obverse is occupied by the right-facing profile of Russian Empress Catherine II. In the lower part, below the portrait, is the abbreviation 'S P B' (Saint Petersburg Mint).
