    Along the upper edge of the coin from left to right is the inscription '500TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNIFIED RUSSIAN STATE'. In the center is a portrait of L.N. Tolstoy, to the right of it the year of birth '1828' and below it the year of death '1910'. At the bottom, along the rim, is the inscription in cursive 'Lev Tolstoy'.

Under the line on the right is the manufacturer's (mint) mark 'MMD'. Slightly below is the coin's denomination, the numeral '100', and below it the word 'RUBLES'. Near the lower edge is the year of mintage '1991'.
