The denomination (with five-leaf sprigs to the left and right) and monetary unit are indicated on two lines: ✿ 5 ✿ RUBLES Below is a decorative divider consisting of two oppositely directed ornamental lines with a dotted rosette between them. Beneath the divider is the year of mintage '1840'. Below the year is the abbreviation 'S.P.B.' (Saint Petersburg Mint). Between the edge and the center of the coin is a rim of closely spaced dots. Between the edge and this rim, a circular inscription reads: CHISTAGO ZOLOTA 1 ZOLOTNIK 39 DOLY (Pure Gold 1 Zolotnik 39 Dolya). The edge of the coin is decorated with a rim of sharp teeth pointing towards the center.
  • Obverse
The central part features the State Emblem of the Russian Empire — a double-headed eagle, its heads crowned with two coronets, and a third, larger crown above them. On the eagle's breast is the Moscow coat of arms, depicting St. George the Victorious on horseback slaying a dragon with a spear. Surrounding the shield is the chain of the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called. On the wings are the titular coats of arms: on the right — Kazan, Astrakhan, and Siberian; on the left — Polish, Taurican, and Finnish. In its right talon the eagle holds a scepter, and in its left — an orb. Under the right talon is the letter 'A', under the left — the letter 'Ch'. These are the initials of mintmaster Alexei Chadov. The rim is decorated with denticles.
