Reverse
The central part features the denomination 'MONETA RUBL' (COIN ROUBLE) in two lines. Above the denomination is the Crown of the Russian Empire. Below the denomination is a decorative divider consisting of two oppositely directed ornamental lines with a small circle between them, featuring a raised dot in its center. Slightly below this ornamental divider is the coin's year of mintage '1840', beneath which is the abbreviation 'S.P.B.' (Saint Petersburg Mint). Along the left edge of the coin is a laurel branch, and along the right edge is an oak branch. The bases of the branches are tied together with a ribbon, the knot of which forms a bow. The entire edge of the coin is stamped with raised denticles.
Obverse
The central part depicts the State Emblem of the Russian Empire – a double-headed eagle, its heads crowned with two smaller crowns, and a third, larger crown above them. On the eagle's breast is the coat of arms of Moscow – a shield depicting St. George the Victorious on horseback, slaying a serpent with a long spear (the serpent's head is to the right). Surrounding the shield is the chain of the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called. On the wings are depicted the titular coats of arms: on the right – Kazan, Astrakhan, and Siberian; on the left – Polish, Taurican, and Finnish. In its right talon the eagle holds a scepter, and in its left – an orb. Below the right talon is the letter 'N', below the left – the letter 'G'. These are the initials of mintmaster Nikolai Grachev. The center of the obverse is enclosed within a thin, continuous braided border. At the top is an eight-petaled flower, visually indicating the start of the inscription: 'CHISTAGO SEREBRA 4 ZOLOTNIKA 21 DOLIA' (PURE SILVER 4 ZOLOTNIKS 21 PARTS). The rim is decorated with denticles pointing towards the center.
