The central part features the State Emblem of the Russian Empire – a double-headed eagle with wings spread and lowered. Above the eagle's heads is the imperial crown. On the eagle's breast is the coat of arms of Moscow – a shield depicting St. George the Victorious on horseback, slaying a serpent with a long spear. The eagle holds thunderbolts and a torch in its right talon and a laurel wreath in its left, both entwined with the ribbon of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle the First-Called. Below the ribbon are the letters: 'N' on the left and 'G' on the right. The initials of Mintmaster Nikolai Grachev. The central image is enclosed within a decorative wreath, crossed by ribbons at the top, bottom, right, and left. Behind the wreath, along the rim, is a circular inscription: around the eagle, facing inward – 'CHISTAGO SEREBRA 4 ZOLOTNIKA 21 DOLEI' (Pure Silver 4 Zolotniks 21 Dolias), below the eagle, facing outward – 'RUBLE 1827'. The two inscriptions and the word 'RUBLE' with the issue date are separated by three six-pointed stars. The edge is decorated with denticles.
  • Obverse
The center of the obverse is occupied by the right-facing profile of Nicholas I. Around the portrait is the text: 'B. M. NIKOLAI I IMP I SAM VSIEROSS.' (By the Grace of God Nicholas I Emperor and Autocrat of All Russia). Below the portrait are the letters 'S. P. B.', (Saint Petersburg Mint). The edge consists of denticles.
