The denomination on two lines (five-pointed rosettes left and right) and the monetary unit: ✿ 5 ✿ RUBLES Below is a decorative divider consisting of two opposing ornamental lines with a dotted rosette between them. Below the divider is the year of mintage '1842'. Under the year is the abbreviation 'S.P.B.' (Saint Petersburg Mint). Between the edge and the center of the coin is a border of closely spaced dots. Between the edge and this border, a circular inscription reads: CHISTAGO ZOLOTA 1 ZOLOTNIK 39 DOLIY The edge of the coin is decorated with a rim of sharp teeth pointing inward.
Obverse
In the central part is the State Emblem of the Russian Empire — a double-headed eagle, its heads crowned with two imperial crowns, with a third, larger crown above them. On the eagle's breast is the coat of arms of Moscow, depicting St. George the Victorious on horseback slaying a dragon with a spear. Surrounding the shield is the chain of the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called. On the wings are the titular coats of arms: on the right — Kazan, Astrakhan, and Siberian; on the left — Polish, Taurican, and Finnish. In its right talon the eagle holds a scepter, and in its left — an orb. Under the right talon is the letter 'A', under the left — the letter 'Ch'. These are the initials of mintmaster Alexei Chadov. The rim is decorated with denticles.
