Reverse Along the edge arc, an inscription in Latin reads 'PORTUGALIAE ET ALGARBIORUM REX', translating to 'King of Portugal and the Algarves', with the mint year '1829' below, flanked on both sides by raised quatrefoil elements. In the central part, a wreath formed by two oak branches tied at the base with a bow. Inside the wreath is the Roman numeral 5 'V'.
Obverse Along the rim are Latin inscriptions, on the right 'MICHAEL I', on the left 'DEI GRATIA', translating to 'Miguel I by the Grace of God'. The words in the inscriptions are separated by quatrefoils, with a large flower below. In the central part, the coat of arms of Portugal: a heraldic shield crowned with an imperial crown. On the shield, arranged in the form of a cross, are five small Portuguese shields with bezants, around the edge of the large shield is a wide, indented border with seven castles.
