    Along the upper edge of the coin is a Latin inscription 'PORTUGALIAE E BRASILIAE ET ALGARB REX', which translates as 'King of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves'. The central part features a wreath formed by two olive branches tied at the base with a bow. Inside the wreath, a quatrefoil is positioned at the top, below it the Roman numeral 3 'III', beneath that the year of minting '1818', and a second quatrefoil is placed above the bow of the wreath.
  • Obverse
    The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles. Along the rim are Latin inscriptions, on the right 'JOANNES VI', on the left 'DEI GRATIA', translating as 'John VI by the Grace of God'. The words in the inscriptions are separated by quatrefoils. The central part depicts the crowned middle coat of arms of Portugal: a heraldic shield on an armillary sphere, crowned with the imperial crown. The shield displays five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each with bezants, and the large shield is surrounded by a wide, indented bordure with seven castles.
