    Along the edge of the coin are Latin inscriptions in an arc: on the left 'UTILITATI', on the right 'PUBLICAE', translating to 'FOR THE PUBLIC UTILITY'. Below is the number '40'. In the central part is the lesser coat of arms of Portugal crowned with the imperial crown: on an oval shield, five small Portuguese shields arranged in a cross with bezants, around the large shield is a wide, fluted border with seven castles.

    Around the edge of the coin, from left to right, runs the Latin text 'JOANNES D G PORT ET ALG P REGENS', translating to 'John, by the Grace of God, Prince Regent of Portugal and the Algarves'. Below is the year of minting '1814'. In the central part is the right-facing profile of the Prince.
