Reverse Along the upper edge, the Latin inscription 'PORTUGALIAE BRASILIAE ET ALGARE REX', meaning 'King of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves'. In the center, a wreath formed by two olive branches tied at the base with a bow. Inside the wreath, the Roman numeral 'V' (5) separates the mint year '18 24'.
Obverse The edge is decorated with convex denticles. Along the rim are Latin inscriptions: on the right 'JOANNES VI', on the left 'DEI GRATIA', meaning 'John VI by the Grace of God'. The words are separated by quatrefoils. In the center, the crowned middle coat of arms of Portugal: a heraldic shield on an armillary sphere, surmounted by an imperial crown. The shield features five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each with bezants, surrounded by a wide, tressure border with seven castles.
