Reverse Along the edge of the coin, an inscription in Latin reads 'PORTUGALIAE E ALGARBIORUM REGENS', which translates as 'Regent of Portugal and the Algarve'. The beginning and end of the inscription are separated at the top by a relief flower with eight petals. In the central part, there is a wreath formed by two olive branches tied at the base with a bow. Inside the wreath, a quatrefoil is placed at the top, below it the Roman numeral 3 'III', and below that the year of minting '1804'. A second quatrefoil is located above the bow of the wreath.
Obverse Along the rim are inscriptions in Latin: on the right 'JOANNES', on the left 'DEI GRATIA', translating as 'John, by the Grace of God'. In the central part is the lesser coat of arms of Portugal crowned with an imperial crown: on the heraldic shield, five escutcheons with bezants are arranged in the form of a cross; the edges of the large shield feature a wide, fluted bordure with seven castles. The heraldic shield is framed by relief elements in the Rococo style.
