    Along the upper edge of the coin, Latin inscriptions: left 'UTILITATI', right 'PUBLICAE', translating to 'FOR THE PUBLIC GOOD'; below, the year of minting '1831'. All inscriptions are separated by a group of three raised elements in the form of four-petaled flowers (a large central one flanked by two smaller ones). The central part features the number '40' within a wreath formed by two olive branches tied at the base with a bow.
  • Obverse
    Along the edge of the coin in the right, bottom, and left parts, a Latin inscription: 'MICHAEL I D G PORTUG ET ALGARB REX', translating to 'Miguel I, by the Grace of God, King of Portugal and the Algarves'. The central part features the lesser coat of arms of Portugal crowned with an imperial crown: on the heraldic shield, arranged in the form of a cross, are five escutcheons with bezants; the edges of the large shield are surrounded by a wide bordure with seven castles.
