In the central part, the Mariner 9 automatic interplanetary station is depicted in orbit around Mars. To the left above the spacecraft is its English name 'MARINER IX' and the NASA emblem; to the right on the planet's surface is the commemorative date 'NOVEMBER 13TH 1971'. Around the circumference along the rim are English inscriptions: at the top '30TH ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST MAN ON THE MOON', at the bottom in two lines - '1 CROWN', flanked on both sides by a dot.
Obverse
In the center is the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain wearing a crown. In the truncation of the portrait are the initials of the British sculptor Raphael David Maklouf - 'RDM'; below the truncation are the Latin letters 'PM' - the mintmark of the Pobjoy Mint, Surrey, United Kingdom. Around the circumference along the rim are English inscriptions: on the left the monarch's name 'ELIZABETH II', on the right the name of the British Crown Dependency 'ISLE OF MAN' and the year of issue '1999'. Along the rim are decorative raised denticles.
