The central field features the Roman numeral 20 'XX' within a wreath formed by olive and oak branches, tied at the base with a bow.

The coin's rim features decorative raised denticles. Around the edge in the right, bottom, and left sections, an inscription in Latin reads 'MARIA II DEI GRATIA', translated as 'Maria II by the Grace of God', with all words separated by raised quatrefoil elements. The central field depicts the lesser coat of arms of Portugal crowned with an imperial crown: on the heraldic shield, five escutcheons with bezants are arranged in a cross form, surrounded by a wide bordure with seven castles. The heraldic shield is framed by raised linear patterns.
