An inscription along the left and right arcs of the coin, separated by three five-pointed stars, reads in Spanish: 'UN QUARTO', meaning 'one quarter' - 1/4 (real). The coin's edge has decorative raised denticles.
Obverse The central part depicts a bow, a quiver with arrows, and a flag. An inscription in Spanish runs along the arc of the coin's edge from left to right: 'DEPARTAMENTO DE JALISCO', meaning 'Department of Jalisco'. In the lower part along the arc of the edge, separated by seven-petal flowers, is the mint year 1836. The coin's edge has decorative raised denticles.
