The lower part depicts snow-covered ground, with snow-laden spruce trees on the left and right. Above the snowy treetops, in the upper part, the Northern Lights shine against a starry sky. Near the rim on the right is the Latin letter 'P' - the artist's mark of Reijo Paavilainen.
Obverse
Three snowflakes are depicted. Above them is the numeral '5', with the word 'EURO' written vertically along its right side. Near the rim on the right is the mint year '2012' horizontally. Along the bottom rim is the country name 'Finland' in two languages: Finnish 'SUOMI' and Swedish 'FINLAND'. In the core of the left snowflake is the mintmark of the Finnish Mint – a heraldic lion within a circle.
