    Along the upper edge of the coin, an inscription in Latin from left to right reads 'PORTUGALIAE ET ALGARBIORUM REGINA', which translates as 'Queen of Portugal and the Algarves', with the year of minting '1838' below, flanked on both sides by raised quatrefoils. In the central part, a wreath formed by olive and oak branches, tied at the base with a bow. Inside the wreath is the Roman numeral 10 'X'.
  • Obverse
    Along the rim are inscriptions in Latin, on the left 'MARIA II', on the right 'DEI GRATIA', translating as 'Maria II by the Grace of God'. All words in the inscriptions are separated by raised quatrefoils, with another, larger one below. In the central part, the coat of arms of Portugal: a heraldic shield crowned with an imperial crown. On the shield, arranged in the form of a cross, are five small Portuguese shields with bezants, around the edge of the large shield is a wide, indented border with seven castles.
