In the central part, a seahorse facing left, three fish to the right, and seaweed below. In the upper part, following the curve of the coin's edge, the English text 'PATRONS OF THE OCEAN'.
Obverse
At the top, the English text 'BANK OF ZAMBIA', at the bottom the inscription '1000 KWACHA'. In the upper part, the state coat of arms, featuring a shield with six wavy vertical bars, crossed hoe and pick above it, and an eagle turned to the right above that. The shield is held by a man on the right and a woman on the left, standing on a grassy field. At the base of the arms is the motto 'One Zambia One Nation'. In the lower part is a circle containing the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain wearing a crown. On either side are the digits of the split year of issue '2001': '20' on the left, '01' on the right.
