Obverse
In the central part is the number 40 in Roman numerals: "XL", above it is a crown, below - the year of minting: "1778". To the right, below, and to the left along the edge is a Latin text: "MARIA.I.E.PETRUS.III..D.G.P.E.BRASIL.REGES" - "MARIA I AND PEDRO III BY THE GRACE OF GOD KINGS OF PORTUGAL AND BRAZIL". Decorative raised denticles are placed along the edges of the rim.
