Reverse Around the edge of the coin are decorative raised serrations. Along the upper arc is the country name in English, NEW ZEALAND. At the bottom is the year of issue '1956'. In the central part of the reverse is a relief design of crossed patu onewa (or patu wahaiika), traditional weapons of Maori warriors, and the inscription '3d' for 'three pence'. Beneath the patu are the letters 'KG', the engraver's mark for George Edward Kruger-Gray.
Obverse Around the edge of the coin are decorative raised dots. Along the arc of the coin's edge is the text 'QUEEN . ELIZABETH . THE . SECOND'. The beginning and end of the inscription are separated by a cross. In the central part is the right-facing profile of the young Queen wearing a laurel wreath (variety - with a shoulder strap).
