Reverse The central part of the reverse features a relief design of the seated goddess Liberty facing left, with a Phrygian cap atop a spear in her right hand. Along the arc of the left and right edge of the coin is an inscription in Spanish, separated by three five-pointed stars: 'UNA CUARTILLA', meaning 'one quarter part' - 1/4 (real). The coin's edge is decorated with raised denticles.
Obverse The central part depicts a bow, a quiver with arrows, and a flag. Along the arc of the coin's edge from left to right runs text in Spanish: 'DEPARTAMENTO DE JALISCO', meaning 'Department of Jalisco'. In the lower part along the arc of the edge, separated by eight-petaled flowers, is the mint year 1859. The coin's edge is decorated with raised denticles.
