Reverse
The central part of the reverse features a relief design of the seated goddess Liberty facing left, with a liberty cap on a spear in her right hand; a cornucopia lies at her feet. Along the arc of the left and right edge of the coin is an inscription in Spanish: 'UNA CUARTILLA DE REAL.1859', translating to 'one quarter real' and the mint year 1859. The coin's edge is decorated with raised denticles.
Obverse
The central part depicts the coat of arms of Mexico. Along the arc of the coin's edge from left to right runs text in Spanish: 'EST:LIB: Y SOB: DE SONORA.', which translates to 'Free and Sovereign State of Sonora'. The coin's edge is decorated with raised denticles.
