Along the upper edge from left to right is the Spanish text: 'Est: Lib: de Guanajuato' (full name: Estado Libre de Guanajuato), which translates to 'Free State of Guanajuato', and the date 1856. Along the lower edge, separated by two six-petaled flowers, is the Spanish inscription: 'UNA CUARTILLA' - 1/4 (real).
