The 'R' symbol on the left near the rim is the mintmark of the Rhode Island mint.
  • Obverse
The central part depicts the coat of arms of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, which is a round disc with an angel framed by two interlocking chains. Along the outer edge of the disc, the state name in English 'REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS' is at the top, and the motto in Marshallese 'JEPILPILIN KE EJUKAAN', translating to 'Accomplishment Through Joint Effort', is at the bottom. Two rays emanate upward from the angel's head, between which is a twenty-four-pointed star. Above the angel's wings, a fishing net is shown on the right, and a shell tool on the left. Below the wings: a canoe on the right, coconut palms on the left. Below the angel is an image of a traditional Marshallese navigational chart in perspective, beneath it the inscription on a ribbon 'Seal', translating from English as 'Seal'. Outside the outer chain, to the left of the disc, is the $5 sign — 'five dollars', and to the right, the year of mintage '1996'.
