Along the upper rim arc the inscription '1000TH ANNIVERSARY OF OLD RUSSIAN ARCHITECTURE', in the center an image of St. Sophia Cathedral in Veliky Novgorod, below it the year of the cathedral's construction '1045', at the bottom along the rim the words separated by a dot 'ST. SOPHIA CATHEDRAL' and 'NOVGOROD'.

In the upper part of the coin is the State Emblem of the USSR, encircled by a ribbon (15 turns), below it the letters 'USSR', further below left and right a line, under the line on the left the chemical symbol Au and the fineness 900 of the coin's metal, below them the pure weight of the precious metal '7.78', under the line on the right the manufacturer's mark (mint) 'MMD', slightly lower the coin's denomination numeral '50' and below the word 'RUBLES', at the bottom near the rim the coin's year of minting '1988'.
