Reverse The central part features the lesser coat of arms of Portugal - a shield on a background of an armillary sphere. Along the arc of the left and right edge of the coin is an inscription in Latin: "PECUNIA.TOTUN CIRCUMIT.ORBEM" - "MONEY CIRCULATES AROUND THE WORLD". Decorative raised denticles are placed along the rim.
Obverse The central part features the number 40 in Roman numerals: "XL", above it is a crown, below - the year of minting: "1822" and the mint mark: "R" - Rio de Janeiro. To the right, bottom, and left along the edge is text in Latin: "JOANNES VI D G PORT BRAS ET ALG REX" - "JOHN VI BY THE GRACE OF GOD KING OF PORTUGAL BRAZIL AND THE ALGARVES". Decorative raised denticles are placed along the rim.
