    Along the lower edge arc are five raised elements in the shape of a five-pointed star. In the central part, within a wreath, a four-line inscription in Spanish reads '1/4 / REAL / NIQUEL', which translates as 'quarter real / production material - nickel'.

    Around the edge of the coin are decorative raised dots. In the central part is an image of three volcanoes, above them a sun with radiating rays in the form of an eight-pointed star. Below the volcanoes is the year of minting '1901'. Below that is the symbol 'H' - the mint mark for the Birmingham Mint, United Kingdom.
