Reverse
In the central part, surrounded by a wreath of oak and laurel leaves, an inscription in Spanish in three lines: "OCTAVO DE REAL" - 1/8 real and the mint year 1842. Below the wreath is the Mexico City mint mark. The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles.
Obverse
In the central part, a depiction of the seated Liberty goddess facing left, holding a spear in her left hand, her right hand resting on an open book. The book bears the Spanish inscription "LEY", meaning "Law". Below the goddess is the Spanish inscription: "L.ROVIRA.F". On the right side, along the arc of the coin's edge, is the Spanish inscription: "LIBERTAD", meaning "Liberty". The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles.
