The central part depicts the 'Viking 1' lander on the surface of Mars. In the background are the solar system and the flight path of the orbital station. On the left is the name of the Mars artificial satellite 'VIKING MARS LANDER', on the right the commemorative date 'JULY 20th 1976'. Around the circumference along the rim are inscriptions in English: at the top '30TH ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST MAN ON THE MOON', at the bottom in two lines - '1 CROWN', flanked on both sides by a dot.
Obverse
In the center is the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain wearing a crown. In the truncation of the portrait are the initials of the British sculptor Raphael David Maklouf - 'RDM', below the truncation the Latin letters 'PM' - the mintmark of the Pobjoy Mint, Surrey, United Kingdom. Around the circumference along the rim are inscriptions in English: on the left the monarch's name 'ELIZABETH II', on the right the name of the British Crown Dependency 'ISLE OF MAN' and the year of issue '1999'. Along the rim are decorative raised denticles.
