Reverse In the central part, an ancient depiction of the globe. Around the circumference, a Latin inscription: «CIRCUMIT ORBEM PECÚNIA TOTUM», translated as: «Money rules the world». The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles.
Obverse In the central part, «XL» - the Roman numeral 40, overstruck with a countermark from the period 1809-1837. To its left and right are images of four-petaled flowers; below it is the year 1753, with images of a different type of four-petaled flower to its left and right. All of this is enclosed within a circle of dots. Above the numeral is the crown of the Portuguese kings. To the right, bottom, and left along the edge is a Latin text: «IOSEPHUS.I.D.G.REX.P.ET.D.GUIN», the title of King Joseph I the Reformer of Portugal. The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles.
