Reverse Along the arc of the left edge of the coin is the country name 'NEW ZELAND'. On the right is the inscription 'HALF PENNY'. At the bottom is the year of issue '1947'. In the central part is a figure of a Hei-Tiki with three-fingered hands pressed to its body and a large head tilted to the side, considered a symbol of birth and fertility. Floral ornaments are on either side.
Obverse Around the edge of the coin are decorative raised dots. Along the arc of the coin's edge on the left, top, and right is the English text 'GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR'. In the central part is the left-facing profile of King George VI. Below the neck truncation are the letters 'HP' — the engraver's mark of Thomas Humphrey Paget.
