    Within a circle, the top features a cherry blossom tree on the left and a cameo with a frontal portrait of Cai Lun on the right. Beneath the tree branches is the subject's name in two languages: English 'TSAI LUN' above and Chinese characters '蔡倫' below. At the bottom left is the English text 'FIRST NATURAL FIBRE PAPER AD 105', and at the bottom right is a stack of paper. Along the edge of the coin are inscriptions in English: at the top 'INVENTIONS OF THE MODERN WORLD', and at the bottom in two lines '1 CROWN'.

    Centered is the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain wearing a crown. In the truncation of the portrait are the initials of the British sculptor Raphael David Maklouf - 'RDM', below the truncation are the Latin letters 'PM' - the mintmark of the Pobjoy Mint, Surrey, United Kingdom. Around the circumference along the rim are inscriptions in English: on the left the monarch's name 'ELIZABETH II', on the right the name of the British Crown Dependency 'ISLE OF MAN' and the year of issue '1995'. The rim features decorative raised denticles.
