Reverse Along the edge arc, Latin inscriptions: left 'UTILITATI', right 'PUBLICAE', translating to 'PUBLIC UTILITY'; below, the year of minting '1833'. All inscriptions are separated by a group of three raised elements in the form of four-petaled flowers (a large central one flanked by two smaller ones). The central part features the number '40' within a wreath formed by olive and oak branches, tied at the base with a bow.
Obverse The edge of the coin is decorated with raised dots. Along the edge arc, in the right, bottom, and left sections, a Latin inscription reads 'MARIA II D G PORTUG ET ALG REGINA', translating to 'Maria II, by the Grace of God, Queen of Portugal and the Algarves'. The central part features the lesser coat of arms of Portugal, crowned with an imperial crown: on the heraldic shield, five escutcheons with bezants are arranged in a cross shape; the large shield is bordered by a wide bordure with seven castles.
