The "R" symbol on the left near the rim is the mintmark of the Rhode Island mint.
  • Obverse
The central part depicts the coat of arms of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, which is a circular disc with an angel framed by two interlocking chains. Along the outer edge of the disc, at the top, is the English name of the state "REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS", and at the bottom — the motto in Marshallese "JEPILPILIN KE EJUKAAN", translated as "Accomplishment Through Joint Effort". Two rays emanate upward from the angel's head, between which is a twenty-four-pointed star. Above the angel's wings, on the right, is a fishing net, on the left — a shell tool. Below the wings: on the right — a canoe, on the left — coconut palms. Below the angel is an image of a traditional Marshallese navigational chart in perspective, beneath it the inscription on a ribbon "Seal". Below the outer chain, to the left of the disc, is the $5 sign, and to the right — the year of mintage "1996".
