    Along the upper edge of the coin, from left to right, the inscription 'CITTA DEL VATICANO' — Vatican City. Below, 'L.20' — 'twenty lire'. In the central part of the reverse is a relief depiction of a saintly pilgrim with a staff and an outstretched hand. The host is opening a door for him hospitably and holds a lantern in his hands.

    Along the left edge of the coin, the inscription 'IOANNES PAVLVS II P. M. AN.III', which translates from Italian as 'Pope John Paul II, third year of pontificate'. On the right, the year of minting 'MCMLXXXI' — 1981. In the central part, a left-facing profile of the Pope. Below the profile truncation, the letters 'Veroi' — the mark of engraver Guido Veroi.
