In the central part, against a circular background, the coats of arms of three Italian cities are depicted with their bases down, forming a triangle. Above each coat of arms is the corresponding city name in Italian: at the top 'PALERMO', at the bottom-left 'UDINE', at the bottom-right 'VERONA'. Football players are depicted between the coats of arms. Around the circumference along the rim are inscriptions in English: at the top 'WORLD CUP ITALY 1990', at the bottom in two lines – '1 CROWN', flanked on both sides by three dots.

In the center is the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom wearing a crown. Below the portrait truncation are the Latin letters 'PM' – the mintmark of the Pobjoy Mint, Surrey, United Kingdom. Around the circumference along the rim are inscriptions in English: on the left the monarch's name 'ELIZABETH II', on the right the name of the British Crown Dependency 'ISLE OF MAN' and the year of issue '1990'. Around the rim are decorative raised denticles.
