In the central part, within a smaller circle (hatched with horizontal lines) the number '40', above it on a curved ribbon the inscription in a semicircle in Spanish: 'CENTÉSIMOS' - 40 centimos, surrounded by a wreath tied in the center with a ribbon. Below the wreath the letter 'D' - the mintmark for the Lyon Mint (France). The edge of the coin features decorative elements in the form of denticles.
Obverse
In the central part, a depiction of the Sun with a face and rays of varying lengths. Around the edge of the coin the name of the country Eastern Republic of Uruguay in Spanish: 'REPÚBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY' and the year of minting 1857. To the left and right of the year are images of an anchor and a lion (marks of the mint director and mintmaster). The edge of the coin features decorative elements in the form of denticles.
