    In the central part, a monkey sitting on a branch, facing right. To the right, below the branch, is the Chinese character for 'Monkey'. Along the upper edge of the coin from left to right are listed the years: 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, and 2004, separated by triangles. Along the lower edge is the inscription: '$5' - five dollars.

    In the central part, an image of the seated Goddess of Liberty with a sheaf of ears of grain in her right hand. To her left, a rising sun; to her right, three flags with five-pointed stars, against the background of the flags is a globe of the Earth with the English inscription: 'LIBERTY'. Below, at the feet of the goddess in a decorative cartouche, is the mint year 1997. Below the image of Liberty is a three-line inscription in English: 'LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE', which translates to: 'Love of liberty brought us here'. In the upper part, along the edge of the coin, is the country name Republic of Liberia in English: 'REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA'. The coin's edge features decorative elements in the form of dentils.
