Around the edge in the right, bottom, and left sections, an inscription in Latin reads 'MARIA II DEI GRATIA', translating to 'Maria II by the Grace of God', with all words separated by raised quatrefoil elements. The central field depicts the lesser coat of arms of Portugal crowned with an imperial crown: on the heraldic shield, five escutcheons with bezants are arranged in a cross, surrounded by a wide bordure with seven castles. The heraldic shield is framed by raised linear patterns.
