  • Obverse
In the central part is the coat of arms of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, which is a round disc with an angel framed by two interlocking chains. Along the outer edge of the disc at the top is the state name in English 'REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS', at the bottom is the motto in Marshallese 'JEPILPILIN KE EJUKAAN', translated as 'Accomplishment through joint effort'. Two rays emanate upward from the angel's head, between which is a twenty-four-pointed star. Above the angel's wings: on the right is a fishing net, on the left is a tool made from a mollusk shell. Below the wings: on the right is a canoe, on the left are coconut palms. Below the angel is an image of a traditional Marshallese navigational chart in perspective, below it the inscription on a ribbon 'Seal'. Under the outer chain to the left of the disc is the $5 sign, to the right is the year of mintage '1996'.
