    In the central part, a noble stag (facing left) drinks water from a waterfall. Along the upper edge arc, the country name in Italian "CITTA DEL VATICANO" (Vatican City). Below, the inscription "L. 20" (20 lire), flanked on each side by three stars equally spaced from each other.
  • Obverse
    In the central part, the coat of arms of the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Paul VI, depicting a shield surmounted by the papal tiara, with crossed keys behind the shield. Along the edge arc of the coin runs the Latin text "PAVLVS VI P.M. A. VIII MCMLXX" (Paul VI, Supreme Pontiff, 8th year of his pontificate, 1970), with stars between the words. In the lower part along the coin's edge arc are the marks of the artist Tomas Gismondi - "T. Gismondi" and the engraver Guerrino Mattia Monassi - "Monassi".
