In the central part is a frontal portrait of the historian and political figure Mykhailo Serhiyovych Hrushevskyi. Above his right shoulder is an image of Lviv University. Along the arc of the left and right edge of the coin is his name in Ukrainian: «Михайло Грушевський» (Mykhailo Hrushevskyi), below along the rim are the years of his life 1866-1934.
Obverse
In the central part, within a circle of dots, is the Coat of Arms of Ukraine framed by two branches with leaves and berries. Above the coat of arms is the year of minting 1996. Below the coat of arms is a two-line semicircular inscription: «200 000 КАРБОВАНЦІВ» - 200 thousand Karbovanets. To the left, top, and right along the rim, separated on each side by an ornamental vignette, is an inscription in Ukrainian: «НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ», which translates to: 'National Bank of Ukraine'.
