    In the central part, within an openwork circular frame, is a palm tree dividing the year of issue into two parts: "19" on the left and "49" on the right (1949). Below the palm tree is the Birmingham mint mark – "H". Inscriptions in English follow the edge of the coin: at the top - BRITISH WEST AFRICA, at the bottom - "ONE SHILLING". The edge is decorated with decorative denticles.
  • Obverse
    In the central part is the left-facing profile of King George VI of Great Britain wearing a crown. A Latin legend follows the edge of the coin: "GEORGIVS VI DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX FID: DEF:", which translates to "GEORGE VI BY THE GRACE OF GOD KING OF ALL THE BRITONS, DEFENDER OF THE FAITH". Below the King's neck truncation are the initials of the British medallist Percy Metcalfe - "PM". The coin's rim features decorative raised denticles.
