In the central part is a globe, against which is a ribbon with the letter "R" - the mintmark of the Rio de Janeiro mint. Along the upper edge of the coin is an inscription in Latin: "PECUNIA.TOTUM CIRCUMIT.ORBEM" - "MONEY CIRCULATES AROUND THE WORLD".
Obverse
In the central part is the Roman numeral 20: "XX", above it is depicted a crown, below - the year of issue: "1816". To the right, below, and to the left along the edge is text in Latin: "JOANNES.D.G.P.ET.BRASILIÆ.P.REGENS" - "JOHN BY THE GRACE OF GOD KING OF PORTUGAL AND REGENT OF BRAZIL". Decorative raised denticles are placed along the edges of the rim.
