Obverse In the central part, «XL» - the Roman numeral 40, with a three four-petaled flower to the left, right, and between the numerals. Below it is the year 1757 with dots on either side. All of this is enclosed within a circle of dots. Above the numeral is the crown of the Portuguese kings. To the right, bottom, and left along the edge is a Latin text: «IOSEPHUS I D G REX P ET D GUINEA», the title of King Joseph I the Reformer of Portugal. The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles.
