In the central part, a French inscription in two lines: «1 FRANC 1981» - 1 franc 1981. Below it are the letters of the Paris Mint - a wing and a cornucopia. Along the upper edge of the coin from left to right runs a French text: «UNION MONETAIRE OUEST-AFRICAINE» - West African Monetary Union, framed by dots, below - the mark «JP. PÉTHORÉ», belonging to the artist Jean-Pierre Réthoré.

In the central part, a gold-dust weight (Taku-Ashanti). To its left is the letter «JP.R.» - the mark of the Paris Mint artist Jean-Pierre Réthoré. Around the edge of the coin is a French inscription: «BANQUE CENTRALE ᴅᴇS ETATS ᴅᴇ L'AFRIQVE ᴅᴇ L'OUEST» - Central Bank of the West African States.
