    In the central part, arranged in the form of a regular straight cross, are five heraldic shields, each bearing five bezants. Along the rim are inscriptions: on the left, top, and right, the country name in Portuguese 'REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA' (Portuguese Republic); at the bottom, the mint year '1963', flanked on both sides by a quatrefoil.
