Reverse In the center, a square with a field of horizontal lines containing a latent image of the number '47', visible when the viewing angle is changed. On the sides of the square are kanji characters for 'local government': top - '地', left - '治', right - '方', bottom - '自'. Around the edge, a decorative raised pattern of dots, along which the inscription in English and Japanese: 'JAPAN 47 PREFECTURES COIN PROGRAM 500 YEN 平成 25 年' (Japan 47 Prefectures, Coin Program, 500 Yen, Heisei 25).
Obverse Depicts a section of wall with the cornerstone of the Tomioka Silk Mill, with a female worker in front of it. The stone bears the inscription in Japanese kanji '明治五年' (Meiji 5th year). Below the image, the name of the prefecture in English 'GUNMA' and Japanese '群馬県'. Along the rim, decorated with raised dots, are inscriptions in Japanese kanji: top - the country name '日本国' (Japan), bottom - '五百円' (500 yen).
