    In the central part, against a background pattern of beans, grains, and nuts, the two-line inscription "50 FRANCS". From left to right, the inscription "UNION MONETAIRE OUEST-AFRICAINE" (West African Monetary Union). Along the lower edge arc, the mint year "1978", flanked on the left by a cornucopia (Paris Mint mark) and on the right by a dolphin (mark of the Chief Engraver Emile Rousseau).

    In the central part, the emblem of the BCEAO - a sawfish. Below the emblem (on the left) the engraver's mark "RJ" for Raymond Joly, on the right - a pentagon. Along the edge arc of the coin runs the text "BANQUE CENTRALE DES ETATS DE L'AFRIQUE DE L'OUEST" (Central Bank of West African States).
