    Around the rim are inscriptions in English: left and top, the ruler's name 'MALIETOA TANUMAFILI II.', right, the country name 'SAMOA', bottom, the year of issue '2002', flanked on both sides by a five-pointed star. The central part features a left-facing profile of the head of state. Below the neck truncation are the initials of the engraver Thomas Humphrey Paget - 'HP'.
